Maintaining your lingerie in autumn: The habits that prolong the life of every piece

Autumn marks a change in the way lingerie is worn.

After the summer months, with their frequent washing and travel constraints, the pieces you bring out in October are often the ones that were used less, put away since spring, and deserve a little refresh before returning to everyday life.

Others, worn throughout the summer, need special attention to make it through the colder months in the best possible condition.

In both cases, autumn is the right time to develop care habits that will extend the life of every piece.

At Noir Satine, we believe that care is an integral part of the pleasure of owning beautiful lingerie.

1. Refresh the pieces that have been stored since spring

Nightdresses and kimonos stored since spring need a “refresh” wash before wearing them again.

Even if they weren’t worn, fabrics may have absorbed odors from storage or slightly yellowed if storage conditions weren’t perfect.

A gentle hand wash with cold water and a little Marseille soap or delicate shampoo is usually enough to fully revitalize a well-kept piece.

For satin knit fabrics in particular, this wash helps restore the fabric’s shine and removes the slight creases that formed during storage.

After washing, air-drying flat is essential. Avoid hanging satin slips by their straps, as they could stretch under the weight of the damp fabric.

Lay the piece flat on a clean towel, and reshape it with your hands to return it to its original silhouette.

2. Treat summer pieces that look “tired”

Pieces worn intensely all summer have undergone multiple types of strain: heat, perspiration, repeated washes, and sometimes exposure to the sun or sea water.

Before putting them away for the cold season, or continuing to wear them in autumn, a quick assessment is important.

Check the elastic: An elastic that has lost its tension won’t magically regain its support. If the piece is worth the investment, a tailor can replace it for a modest cost.

Inspect the lace under good light: Loose threads and small holes should be handled immediately with a drop of clear fabric glue or a few discreet stitches, before they get bigger after the next wash.

Check seams in tension areas: Under the arms on bodysuits, and along the sides of slips. A seam that starts to come undone is usually easy to repair, especially if you act before it fully gives way.

3. The right washing frequency in autumn

In autumn, lingerie is generally worn in less demanding conditions than in summer: less perspiration, less heat, and less intense physical activity.

This means you can slightly space out washes, which is great news for delicate materials.

The general rule still applies: wear once before washing for pieces worn directly against the skin.

For kimonos and nightdresses, which don’t sit directly on the skin but are worn as an overlay, two to three wears between washes is usually enough, as long as you haven’t been sweating.

This distinction helps protect the most delicate materials, such as the tulle used in long nightgowns, whose lifespan is directly affected by how often they’re washed.

4. Seasonal storage: preparing the transition

Mid-October is often when the most summer pieces, light micro-thongs, tulle nightdresses get packed away for the colder season.

This storage step deserves as much attention as the refresh process described earlier.

Wash each piece before storing, even if you haven’t worn it recently. Fragrance, cream, or even light perspiration residues you might not notice anymore can attract insects or degrade fibers during months of storage.

Dry completely before putting items away, because even a small amount of residual moisture in a closed drawer can cause mold on delicate fabrics.

Finally, store lace and tulle pieces in separate fabric pouches to avoid snags between different textures.

Care is an act of respect

Taking care of your lingerie with attention is about extending the pleasure of wearing it, and honoring the work of the artisans who created it.

It’s also a form of self-respect: giving yourself the means to keep wearing beautiful pieces and not letting neglect damage what deserves to last.

At Noir Satine, European manufacturing ensures our pieces are designed to stand the test of time, provided they receive the care they deserve.

In this October month, take a few hours for your seasonal check-in: you may find pieces in your drawer that you thought were worn out, waiting only for a little attention to get their full shine back.
